WESTFIELD COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING TO BROADCAST 2021 BERKSHIRE THEATRE CRITICS AWARDS ON DECEMBER 24 AND DECEMBER 31 Westfield, MA--Westfield Community Programming will broadcast the video of the 2021 Berkshire Theatre Critics Awards (“The Berkies”), which was held in Pittsfield, MA on November 15. The video, produced by Pittsfield Community Television, will screen on Westfield Community Programming Channel 15 (WCPC15) at 9AM ET on Friday, December 24 and Friday, December 31. The program will also be simulcast on 89.5fm/WSKB. According to Mark G. Auerbach, producer/host of ArtsBeat TV/Radio on WCPC15 and 89.5fm/WSKB, and a member of the Berkshire Theatre Critics Association, “The “Berkies” are the equivalent of the Tony Awards for the professional theatres, large and small, in our region. Many of these theatres have sent productions on to Broadway and regional theatres nationwide”. Auerbach added that the actual ceremony was held in Pittsfield, with a limited capacity, due to COVID restrictions, “and many theatre lovers didn’t have the opportunity to see the Berkies ceremony in person”. MOSSO Press Release 11/16/21

Dateline: November 16, 2021 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACTS: Musicians of The Springfield Symphony Orchestra (MOSSO) Beth Welty, Assistant Principal Second Violin, 339-368–2996 Bob Lawrence, First Violin, 917-841-3307 Miho Matsuno, First Violin, 917-523-5329 Thomas Bergeron, Principal Trumpet 413-221-9504 Boston Symphony Orchestra Musicians to Donate $10,000 to Musicians of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra (MOSSO) Springfield, MA -- The Musicians of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra (MOSSO) have received a $10,000 donation pledge from their counterparts at the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO). According to Beth Welty, a violinist and MOSSO co-founder, “James Markey, BSO trombonist and Chair of the BSO Players’ Committee, informed us that this gift is being sent ‘with sincere and heartfelt support.’ We are deeply moved and grateful for this wonderful gesture of solidarity from our fellow musicians in Boston.” Welty added, "The BSO musicians are giving this gift not just to MOSSO, but to all of our audience members here in Western Massachusetts. They know how vital our presence is for the economic and cultural well-being of our community — just as theirs is for the Boston area." According to principal trumpeter Thomas Bergeron, another MOSSO co-founder, “In addition to this generous donation from the BSO musicians, MOSSO has received $43,000 from over 130 donors since September, sending a clear message that our audience wishes to see and hear SSO musicians return to Symphony Hall. All of the money we have raised will be used to present live music in Western Massachusetts, including upcoming holiday brass quintet concerts.” Miho Matsuno, a violinist and also a MOSSO co-founder, explained that the musicians founded MOSSO earlier this year in response to the Springfield Symphony Orchestra’s failure to schedule any concerts for the 2021-22 season. “The Springfield Symphony Orchestra last performed live in Symphony Hall in March, 2020. With no agreement in place between the SSO Board and the musicians, no Executive Director, no Music Director, and no concerts planned, the musicians formed MOSSO, a nonprofit organization, to produce live classical music concerts. We've received tremendous community support, and have been gratified by the enthusiastic response of our audiences. The encouragement of both community leaders and music lovers has bolstered our resolve to continue to program and perform concerts.” MOSSO is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, which is not a subsidiary of nor affiliated with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra Inc. MOSSO Media Release 10/26/21

Dateline: October 26, 2021 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACTS: MOSSO: Musicians of The Springfield Symphony Orchestra Beth Welty, Assistant Principal Second Violin, 339-368–2996 Bob Lawrence, First Violin, 917-841-3307 Miho Matsuno, First Violin, 917-523-5329 Thomas Bergeron, Principal Trumpet 413-221-9504 MOSSO: Musicians of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, Thrilled by Response to their October 15 Concert, Moves to Produce Additional Concerts Springfield, MA. MOSSO: Musicians of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, will continue to produce professional classical music concerts for the audiences of Western Massachusetts, following the success of their October 15 concert with Maestro Kevin Rhodes in Springfield Symphony Hall. Coming Home: A Symphonic Reunion filled the COVID-adjusted capacity of Springfield Symphony Hall with 1300 audience members, and reached thousands of additional people nationwide through a livestream, made possible with the support of the City of Springfield, the Music Performance Trust Fund, the American Federation of Musicians, the Office of Mayor Domenic Sarno of the City of Springfield, Amanda Spear-Purchase and the staff of Symphony Hall, benefactor Lyman Wood and lovers of classical music from throughout the Pioneer Valley, Connecticut and beyond. Their monetary and logistical support allowed all audience members to attend or stream the performance for free. Innovative approaches for reaching new audiences is essential for sharing the joy of classical music with younger fans. MOSSO addressed this priority by live streaming the performance (with FOCUS Springfield) and by inviting music students and their parents from the Community Music School of Springfield to attend this free concert in Symphony Hall. Maestro Kevin Rhodes was overwhelmed by the audience’s tumultuous response: “I have to say something about our incredible patrons who filled a capacity-reduced Symphony Hall. While incredible enthusiasm from the audience was a constant feature of every performance I’ve had the pleasure to conduct in Springfield in 20 years, the unbridled passion and love shown to the musicians and the music were completely unprecedented.” Maestro Rhodes added, “This concert was entirely produced by MOSSO. In order to accomplish this amazing feat, the musicians had to learn an incredible number of new tasks and develop new skills in concert production from contracting and communicating with dozens of colleagues to assemble the orchestra. They collaborated with numerous city departments and businesses. They managed finances; solicited grants, sponsorships and donations; marketed and promoted the concert...all within six week’s time.” “The thing I would really like to emphasize,” concluded Maestro Rhodes, “is the reason they did this. It was not to save their own jobs in Springfield, but rather because of the love and passion they feel for classical music and our audiences. This is, in addition to the most committed belief in the mission, value, and power of live music, and the importance of being a positive force in a community standing for excellence and joy, that they demonstrate everytime they walk on stage.” Martin Kluger, Principal Timpanist, reported to the Springfield Symphony Orchestra Inc. Management Committee that live audiences had no concerns about attending a performance with COVID restrictions in Symphony Hall: “Sold out attendance with incident-free observance of COVID precautions at the October 15th event, on top of the outpouring of voluntary donations that MOSSO received online and at the door, prove that the classical music audience in Springfield and environs is ready to support performances.” According to longtime Assistant Concertmistress Marsha Harbison, donations to MOSSO continue to arrive: “As of October 25, MOSSO has received over $40,000 in contributions from over 120 individual donors in the area. This money will be used to produce additional MOSSO events, ensuring that professional classical and symphonic music continues to be a part of Springfield’s cultural identity.” Harbison added that MOSSO had received its non-profit 501(c)(3) determination from the IRS. Kluger added, “MOSSO does not wish to be a rival or competitor to the Springfield Symphony Orchestra,” and said that the musicians are hopeful that the SSO will schedule concerts for a 2021-2022 season while working towards an agreement with the musicians and Maestro Kevin Rhodes. Beth Welty, Assistant Principal Second Violin, says, “Yes indeed, MOSSO does want to collaborate with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra Inc. to deliver music to our audience. However, in the absence of a sensible agreement that demonstrates a positive vision for the SSO’s future, MOSSO will continue to produce musical events. We are moving forward with concerts to be announced shortly. MOSSO is committed to bringing live music to our community and providing work for our musicians.” Thomas Bergeron, Principal Trumpet says, “The musicians poured incredible amounts of their own time and energy into producing the event on October 15th. Why? Because we believe in the City of Springfield and we believe in the power of symphonic music to bring our community together. I started my musical career as a member of the Springfield Symphony Youth Orchestra 25 years ago. I would not be the musician I am today without the support and inspiration that experience provided.” For further information about MOSSO’s upcoming programs, to join the mailing list, and to contribute towards future concerts, visit MOSSO at: www.springfieldsymphonymusicians.com, or find MOSSO on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. MOSSO is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, which is not a subsidiary of nor affiliated with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra Inc. Donations to MOSSO, including checks made payable to MOSSO, Inc. can be sent to: MOSSO, PO Box 3513, Amherst, MA 01004. MOSSO-Musicians of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra Press Release 9/24/21

Dateline: September 24, 2021 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACTS: MOSSO: Musicians of The Springfield Symphony Orchestra Beth Welty, Assistant Principal Second Violin, 339-368–2996 Bob Lawrence, First Violin, 917-841-3307 Miho Matsuno, First Violin, 917-523-5329 Thomas Bergeron, Principal Trumpet 413-221-9504 MOSSO: Musicians of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra to Present Free Concert on Friday, October 15 at Springfield Symphony Hall with maestro Kevin Rhodes Conducting     Springfield, MA. MOSSO: Musicians of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, will present a free concert on Friday, October 15, at 7:30PM, at Springfield Symphony Hall. Maestro Kevin Rhodes, music director and conductor of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra for twenty years, will return to Springfield to lead a program titled “COMING HOME: A Symphonic Reunion” that will include popular symphonic works by Beethoven, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, and others to be announced by Maestro Rhodes from the stage. Maestro Kevin Rhodes is thrilled to be returning to Springfield to conduct this concert with his MOSSO musicians. “I’ve missed my colleagues. Since the pandemic silenced our concerts, and after isolating at my family’s home in Michigan, I’ve been conducting opera and ballet in Milan, Rome, Slovenia, and Slovakia. I’m glad that my colleagues are working together to bring live classical music back to Western Massachusetts, and I’m honored to be on stage with them.” Beth Welty, Assistant Principal Second Violin with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra since 1983, points out, “MOSSO’s efforts to perform live music since the last official SSO concerts have included organizing performances at the Black Lives Matter rally in front of Springfield City Hall in September of 2020, the 2021 Springfield Jazz and Roots Festival with the Kevin Sharpe Band, the Mattoon Street Arts Festival, and a free concert on the steps of Springfield Symphony Hall in June of 2021. Area businesses have also sponsored MOSSO ‘pop-up’ concerts in various locations throughout the city.” Marsha Harbison of Longmeadow, who has been Assistant Concertmaster of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra since 1977, says, “The musicians of the SSO have not performed together on the stage of Springfield Symphony Hall since March of 2020. The professional musicians of the symphony are eager to perform exciting and healing music in our great Symphony Hall, under our world class maestro Kevin Rhodes.” Timpanist Martin Kluger of South Glastonbury, CT, who joined the Springfield Symphony Orchestra as Principal Timpanist in 1980, added, “The Musicians of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra (MOSSO) love performing for the people of Springfield and the greater region. Each of us trained at a university or conservatory music program before joining the Springfield Symphony Orchestra by winning a competitive audition. The impossibility of performing symphonic music in Springfield Symphony Hall for almost 20 months has been a source of severe disappointment for us, and we believe for our audience as well. So, hurray! Finally a live concert and one that is free and open to all! On October 15, with conditions made as safe as possible by observing strict precautions designed to prevent the spread of COVID, we will embrace this unique opportunity to again share our music.” MOSSO thanks the Music Performance Trust Fund, the American Federation of Musicians, the Office of Mayor Domenic Sarno of the City of Springfield, Amanda Spear-Purchase and the staff of Symphony Hall, and Lyman Wood for their support in bringing this free event to Western Massachusetts. Tickets for the October 15 performance are free, but must be reserved in advance. No tickets will be sold at the door, and ticket holders must be masked and have proof of full vaccination against Covid-19. All performers will also be fully vaccinated and masked. Seating will be general admission, but Symphony Hall capacity will be reduced to allow for social distancing. Springfield Symphony Hall is located at 34 Court Street at the corner of Columbus Avenue in downtown Springfield, MA. For details and reservations: www.SpringfieldSymphonyMusicians.com. Donations can be made online through the MOSSO website: SpringfieldSymphonyMusicians.com or checks can be made out to MOSSO and sent to MOSSO, PO Box 3513, Amherst, MA 01004. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contacts: Mark G. Auerbach Public Relations. 413-427-7352 or mgauerbach@gmail.com Diane Pearlman, Berkshire Film and Media Collaborative. 413-329-3912 or diane@berkshirefilm.org HOLLYWOOD LITERARY MANAGER AND PRODUCER MARILYN R. ATLAS LEADS ONLINE WORKSHOP ON CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT JULY 20 (RESCHEDULED) Berkshire Film and Media Collaborative brings Hollywood pro to illuminate the importance of character arcs and in-depth character development. After leading two exceptionally well received workshops on selling ideas for film and television, Hollywood talent/literary manager and award-winning producer Marilyn R. Atlas returns (virtually) on Tuesday, July 20, 6–8 pm, with a practical online workshop for anyone involved in storytelling and world-building. Navigating Character Arcs: Hone Your Script by Deepening Your Character In this two-hour, hands-on, interactive online workshop on July 20, Atlas stresses the importance of knowing your characters inside and out so you can avoid stereotypes and bring your protagonist off the page and into three-dimensional life. She explains how getting inside your character’s head can give your story the authenticity that draws people in and enables you to tailor plot points that work hand-in-hand with your character’s emotional and spiritual progress. Using examples from recent films and television shows, Atlas will elucidate why you must follow your characters down their emotional corridors to take your writing to the next level and make your mark as a storyteller. This workshop will inspire and motivate screenwriters, playwrights, novelists, directors, producers, and anyone involved in world-building to do their best work yet. Some advance preparation is required—Atlas has provided a short list of recent films and television episodes for registrants to watch so they can participate fully. Registration for this workshop is limited to 20 to ensure participants have plenty of time for discussion and Q&A. Complete details and ticket information are available via eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/writing-pitching-workshops-with-literary-manager-producer-marilyn-atlas-tickets-152920365931 Berkshire Film and Media Collaborative executive director Diane Pearlman says she’s pleased to bring Atlas back to lead these workshops: “Marilyn literally wrote the book on character development: Dating Your Character. Linda Cleary, who signed up for Navigating Character Arcs as soon as she finished Atlas’s Pitching workshop on June 10, says “What a phenomenal opportunity it has been to learn from a professional ‘in the biz.’ Marilyn’s workshop has gotten me excited about my plot and characters again and made the whole process seem less intimidating. She literally made the most of every minute of the workshop. Her enthusiasm and encouragement are infectious, and I’m back at my story again.” Marilyn R. Atlas is a Hollywood literary and talent manager and an award-winning producer with a longstanding commitment to diversity and the portrayal of strong female protagonists.
