ACTOR ALAN ALDA TO DELIVER SUFFIELD ACADEMY’S 182nd COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS ON FRIDAY, MAY 22, 2015

Suffield, Connecticut: Actor, author, director, and screenwriter Alan Alda will offer the keynote Commencement Address at Suffield Academy’s 182nd Commencement on the Suffield Academy campus on Friday, May 22, 2015. The Academy’s 126 seniors, including one of Alda’s granddaughters, will receive their diplomas during Commencement 2015.  

Alan Alda has dozens of credits on stage, screen, and television. He’s best-known for his long-running portrayal of Hawkeye Pierce in the hit television series “M*A*S*H”, and his portrayal of Arnold Vinick on “The West Wing”. His Broadway credits include starring roles in “The Owl and The Pussycat”, “Jake’s Women”, “The Apple Tree” and “Glengarry Glen Ross”. He’s received 31 Emmy Award nominations, 2 Tony Award nominations, and an Oscar and BAFTA nomination for his role in “The Aviator”. His memoirs, “Never Have Your Dog Stuffed, and Other Things I’ve Learned” and “Things I Overheard While Talking to Myself” have been New York Times bestsellers.

Alda has a passion for science and education. He hosted the award winning series “Scientific American Frontiers” on PBS for eleven years For over 20 years, Alda has worked to help broaden the public’s understanding of science. He helped found the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University where he is a Visiting Professor, helping to develop innovative programs that enable scientists to communicate more effectively with the public. He originated The Flame Challenge, a yearly international competition for scientists in which they compete to explain complex scientific concepts so that 11-year-olds can understand them. Since 2008, he has worked with physicist Brian Greene in presenting the annual World Science Festival in New York City, attended since its inception by over a million people. He’s the author of a play, “Radiance: the Passion of Marie Curie,” which had its world premiere  in Los Angeles in 2011. 

Suffield Headmaster Charles Cahn III will preside over Commencement ceremonies. Daniel Tisch, President of the Suffield Academy Board of Trustees, and Headmaster Cahn will present diplomas and prizes to graduating seniors, who will head to more than 80 different colleges and universities next fall.

SUFFIELD ACADEMY HOSTS 2015 FUTSAL CAMP JANUARY 4 THROUGH FEBRUARY 22.

Suffield, CT. Suffield Academy will host The 2015 Suffield Academy Futsal Camp every Sunday from January 4 through February 22 (except Sunday, February 1, 2015). A snow date is scheduled for March 1, 2015.

Boys and girls ages 8-15 are encouraged to register for the ten-week program. Younger children may be eligible based on skill. Cost is $150 per player or $140 per player with more than one sibling; team discounts are available.

Futsal is the official indoor sport sanctioned by FIFA and is recognized throughout the world for promoting exceptional skill development and decision-making. It is played on a hard surface with boundary lines and a low-bounce ball and is now the fastest-growing indoor sport in the United States and around the world. Futsal demands quick reflexes, fast thinking, and pin-point passing. The small, heavier futsal ball requires players to hone their ball-striking and ball-handling technique. Great soccer superstars such as Pele, Zico, Ronaldo, Messi, Kaka and Katia grew up playing the game and credit futsal with developing their skills. The Suffield Academy Futsal Camp will teach the skills of the sport and incorporate the proper fundamentals while having fun. The skills will be taught through technical drills and games.

RETIRED SUFFIELD ACADEMY TEACHER BRAD GOOCH ESTABLISHES MERIT SCHOLARSHIP FOR STUDENTS WITH PROMISE IN THE PERFORMING AND VISUAL ARTS

Suffield, CT—Brad Gooch, a faculty member at Suffield Academy from 1960-1966, has furthered his remarkable legacy at Suffield by establishing a merit-based, full one-year scholarship for a member of the Suffield Academy senior class who displays exceptional promise and deep passion for visual arts, performing arts, creative writing, or art history.

The Gooch/Vincenti Scholarship was named by Gooch to also honor the teaching excellence of Mario Vincenti. He led Suffield’s visual arts program from 1956-1964. Brad Gooch said, “I wanted this to be carefully targeted, for an especially talented student, so truly outstanding that he or she has the ability, and perhaps even the desire, to make whatever the chosen field a life's work.”

Brad was an Agawam, Massachusetts, native for many years before moving with his wife Mary to Rome, Georgia, where they currently reside. He taught English, Art History, Music History, and choral music at Suffield Academy. He was the director of Suffield's Glee Club and COGS, and has had a lifelong interest in the arts. He also coached soccer and the Academy's girls' varsity soccer field is named in his honor.

This scholarship is also another symbol of Suffield Academy's deep commitment to the arts. WALTER MOORE, VICE-PRESIDENT OF FEDERAL AFFAIRS FOR THE AMERICAN CHEMISTRY COUNCIL, TO DELIVER SUFFIELD ACADEMY’S 181st COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS ON FRIDAY, MAY 23, 2014

Suffield, Connecticut: Walter Moore, Vice President of Federal Affairs for the American Chemistry Council, will offer the keynote Commencement Address at Suffield Academy’s 181st Commencement on the Suffield Academy campus on Friday, May 23, 2013. The Academy’s 120 seniors are expected to receive their diplomas during Commencement 2014.  

As Vice President of Federal Affairs of the American Chemistry Council (ACC), Moore is responsible for helping to shape and guide the association’s federal legislative priorities. His responsibilities include oversight of direct lobbying activities, industry coalitions, and AmeriChem PAC, the ACC’s political action committee. Prior to joining ACC, Mr. Moore served a total of sixteen years as Senior Director then Vice President of Government Affairs of Genentech, a global leader in the field of biotechnology. Previously, Mr. Moore held positions at Eli Lilly and Company as Manager of Government Relations, and Pfizer, Inc. as Director of Congressional Relations. In addition to his corporate experience, he holds significant association and political experience including the American Hospital Association, the Federal Election Commission, and the office of Sen. Lloyd Bentsen. 

Mr. Moore has a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University and a master's of public administration from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin.

Walter Moore’s wife, Patricia Q. Moore, serves on the Board of Trustees of Suffield Academy. They are the parents of Tod '09 and Harrison '14. The Moore family lives in McLean, VA.

History Lecture on the Underground Railroad in Suffield

Students from Suffield Academy’s American Studies class will present their findings on the history of the Underground Railroad in Suffield. The program will begin at 7:30pm on May 6th in the Kent Memorial Library at 50 North Main Street in Suffield. 

Throughout the winter term, the class investigated Suffield’s potential role in this secret network that assisted fugitives from documented locations—such as Hartford and Farmington—to points north: Springfield, Florence, and Northampton. The presentation will include new information about nineteenth century Suffield residents who were members of the Hartford Anti-Slavery Society. 

Working in a project-based learning model, students discovered that Henry W. Foster of Hartford played a key role in shepherding fugitives north through this area before they found sanctuary with Reverend Osgood in Springfield, Massachusetts. The class researched the location of Foster’s safe house in Hartford, and will be sharing more about Foster’s important role in Hartford County. They are also currently communicating with the State Historic Preservation Office to pursue the installation of a Freedom Trail plaque, which would commemorate Henry W. Foster’s courage and resilience. In addition, the students have been collaborating with leaders at the i-Quilt Plan, an urban design organization that creates innovative pedestrian signs in downtown Hartford. 

Suffield Academy’s American Studies teacher, Bill Sullivan, says, “The class hopes to add the location of Foster’s safehouse as a historic landmark since he was a member of the African American community who helped form Talcott Church, the first African American church in Hartford.”

SUFFIELD ACADEMY HOSTS THE 2014 NEW ENGLAND BASKETBALL COACHES CLINIC

Suffield, Connecticut— The 2014 New England Basketball Coaches Clinic (NEBCC) for basketball coaches of all levels will be hosted by Suffield Academy on Sunday, April 27th from 9AM to 6PM on the Suffield Academy campus in Suffield, CT. 

Jeff Depelteau, Suffield Academy Boys’ Varsity Head Basketball Coach, launched the NEBCC Clinic . The second annual NEBCC features: former UConn Head Coach and Naismith Hall of Fame coach, Jim Calhoun; USA Nike Hoop Summit Team Coach, Mike Jones of DeMatha HS (MD), Owner of Stronger Team & Strength and Conditioning Coach, Alan Stein of DeMatha HS (MD); Jim Boone of Delta State University (MS); and Bob Walsh of Rhode Island College. The clinic concludes with a question and answer session between attendees and the panel of experts.

Depelteau says “Coach Calhoun is a name that everyone recognizes, but everyone speaking on the 27th are masters of their craft. From Mike, to Alan, to Jim (Boone), to Bob, each one of these coaches has competed and won at the highest level of their leagues and divisions. Coach Boone led his Delta State team deep into the NCAA Tournament this year, as does Coach Walsh every year. DeMatha is a household name in high school basketball because of the work that Mike and Alan have done with their program. Mike has helped lead USA Basketball teams to great success on the world stage as well. It is truly a treat for the spectators to learn from such a great range of coaching minds!”

Depelteau adds “This clinic is going to be great for any coach, no matter what level they coach. All of these coaches are master teachers of the game of basketball. Whether you coach boys, girls, youth, high school, or at the collegiate level, there is going to be something for every coach to learn and take back to their teams at this clinic.”

SUFFIELD ACADEMY HOSTS FUTSAL CAMP DECEMBER THROUGH FEBRUARY.

Suffield, CT. Suffield Academy will host The Suffield Academy Futsal Camp every Sunday from December 1, 2013 through February 9, 2014 (except Sunday, December 29, 2013). Boys and girls ages 8-15 are encouraged to register for the ten-week program. Younger children may be eligible based on skill. Cost is $150 per player or $140 per player with more than one sibling; team discounts are available.

Futsal is the official indoor sport sanctioned by FIFA and is recognized throughout the world for promoting exceptional skill development and decision-making. It is played on a hard surface with boundary lines and a low-bounce ball and is now the fastest-growing indoor sport in the United States and around the world. Futsal demands quick reflexes, fast thinking, and pin-point passing. The small, heavier futsal ball requires players to hone their ball-striking and ball-handling technique. Great soccer superstars such as Pele, Zico, Ronaldo, Messi, Kaka and Katia grew up playing the game and credit futsal with developing their skills. The Suffield Academy Futsal Camp will teach the skills of the sport and incorporate the proper fundamentals while having fun. The skills will be taught through technical drills and games.
