South Hadley, MA--The Jazz Ensembles of Mount Holyoke College will travel back in time to the 1940s for the 7th annual and all-new presentation of The Big Broadcast!, to be held on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at 2PM and 7PM in Chapin Auditorium on the campus of Mount Holyoke College, on Route 116 in South Hadley, MA.

Mount Holyoke College Music faculty member Mark Gionfriddo originally created The Big Broadcast! for a small cabaret group he directed, and incorporated it into the concert season at Mount Holyoke College.

“Students and I researched live radio broadcasts of the 1940s: the big band swing music, the radio serials and the commercials of the day”, said Gionfriddo. “We incorporate all of these elements into our production to give the audience the feel of an authentic radio variety program on a fictitious station named WJAZ".

Brian Lapis, chief meteorologist of WWLP-22 News, returns to the Big Broadcast for his fifth season as WJAZ announcer and emcee “Fred Kelley”.

Mark Gionfriddo, as WJAZ Maestro “Matt Morgan”, directs the students of the Mount Holyoke Big Band, Vocal Jazz, and Chamber Jazz Ensembles, who will perform well-known tunes from the swing era, including music by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, and Glen Gray, among others.

Mark Gionfriddo (“Matt Morgan”) is well known to area concertgoers as pianist, accompanist, composer, arranger, and musical director. His versatility and knowledge of many musical styles has brought him together with a wide range of popular and classical artists through the years, among them Mitzi Gaynor, Liberace, Al Martino, Anna Moffo, and Garrison Keillor. A native of Holyoke, MA, Mark started piano studies at the age of four, began performing at six, and directed his first musical project at twelve. His adventures while assistant conductor on board Cunard's MS Royal Viking Sun brought him around the world to 30 countries. Mark received his Bachelor's Degree in Piano from Skidmore College and Masters Degree in Accompanying from UMASS/Amherst. He has been based at Mount Holyoke College, since 1986 where he is a Senior Instructor in Jazz Piano, Director and Founder of the Mount Holyoke College Jazz Ensemble, and Music Department Staff Accompanist. In 2006, Mark conducted the MHC Big Band during two episodes of the popular public radio quiz show “SaysYou!”

Brian Lapis ("Fred Kelley") joined the 22News Storm Team in 1996. He got his start in broadcasting at the age of 15 at radio station WILI, in his hometown of Willimantic, CT. He's worked as a radio on-air talent for stations in Hartford, CT; Philadelphia, PA; Syracuse, NY; and Providence, RI. Brian has a Bachelor's degree in Television Radio Film Management from Syracuse University. In addition he holds a certificate in Broadcast

Meteorology from Mississippi State University.

Cheryl Cobb, Lecturer in Music at Mount Holyoke College, will be featured as a sound effects artist in the second act radio play. Gionfriddo’s student producers are Miriam Cantor-Stone ’MHC’12, Wendy Mellin ’MHC’12 and Emily Moner ’MHC’13. Moner and Linn Jennings MHC’12 serve the ensembles as coordinators of the vocal and instrumental jazz groups.

The Best of The Valley Poll

I always like participating in and reading the results in The Valley Advocate’s “Best of the Valley Poll”. I like having the chance to share my favorite restuatns, stores, people etc. and compare my choices with those of readers throughout the area. I also like the opportunity to sample what others around town feel are the best.

I only have one local client eligible for any of the categories. David Pakman, producer and host of The David Pakman Show is a great choice for Local Radio Personality. But, he’s not quite just that. He’s really more of a multi-platform radio/TV/web show host who happens to be based here in the Valley. He went to high school and college in The Valley. He began his radio program in The Valley. He’s got studios in The Valley. He’s not a drive-time presence, unless you’re listening to his podcasts while you’re driving about. Nonetheless, he’s a guy on 150+ radio and TV stations nationally, on YouTube, and available on his website. www.davidpakman.com.

I’ve got to champion the versatile journalist Scott Coen as “Best Blogger” for his “My Wide World” blog, which profiles interesting people in the area. In the last year or so, Scott has made the transition from TV sportscaster (he still does sports on radio and TV) to “features reporter”. His uncanny ability to showcase an individual doing interesting things via print and broadcast highlights his versatility as a journalist.

The Jazz Ensembles of Mount Holyoke College, under the direction of Mark Gionfriddo, perform the 7th edition of “The Big Broadcast”, a recreation of a live 1940’s radio program complete with swing, pop standards of the day, and commercials. Brian Lapis, meterologist at WWLP-TV22, returns for the 5th year as emcee “Fred Kelley”. Two performances, SUN March 4, 2PM and 7PM at Chapin Auditorium, Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA. Tickets on sale 2/01/12 at Northampton Box-Office, Odyssey Book Shop, and Student Programs Office at Mount Holyoke.

For the record: Mount Holyoke College’s music program is a somewhat new client. I’ve produced a series of special events at Chapin Auditorium on campus.during my WFCR days. When Garrison Keillor came to town to try out a one-man show he was considering for a tour, he needed a pianist on short notice who could sight read. Mount Holyoke recommended Mark Gionfriddo, and Mark and Garrison were a perfect fit. When I produced a live broadcast of the NPR quiz Show “Says You!” at Mount Holyoke, Mark’s student ensembles provided the music for the shows.

It will be great to work with Mark and the good people at Chapin Auditorium again.

I started the year wrapping up loose ends from a benefit performance of The Capitol Steps at Mount Holyoke College as a fund-raiser for The South Hadley Youth Commission. My frequent collaborator, The Mike Thornton Agency and I, were thrilled that the event raised $10,000+ to provide programs and services for the youth of that town.

Although Mike and I chose to not co-produce a Capitol Steps performance in The Pioneer Valley in 2011, we worked together on two other projects: 1) The Capitol Steps 30th Anniversary Tour performances in Cambridge (Boston) over Thanksgiving weekend, and 2) Summer Cabaret/Comedy workshops for older teens and young adults, featuring members of The Capitol Steps, for Creative Cauldron in Northern VA suburbs outside Washington, DC.

I helped colleagues of mine from Wolf Trap, the performing arts center outside Washington, DC celebrate its 40th anniversary with a reunion of people who had worked there in the 1970’s. How awesome to see people I’d first met in my teens.

I developed social media projects for several clients, ghost-wrote press releases and ad copy for some ad agency colleagues’ clients; edited a mystery novel, a play, and several websites and Facebook pages; and I continue to serve Northfield Mount Hermon School as a class secretary and Facebook page administrator for two groups. I also edited resumes and cover letters for out-of-work friends and colleagues.

Personally, it was a year of highs and lows. The highs, besides the Wolf Trap reunion, was seeing the Broadway revival of “Follies” (a show I’d first seen while in college) TWICE. It’s a musical about a reunion, and having just been to one, resonated even more on a personal level. Other great moments: seeing Audra McDonald in “Porgy and Bess” at The American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, with my 92 year old dad along for the show; some other fine theatre performances, and getting the first chance in many years, to really enjoy a summer at the pool.

The low: one of my best friends for over 20 years, WFCR colleague Bob Paquette passed away unexpectedly in May. I helped several local reporters develop obituaries and memorials. One colleague, Scott Coen, developed a TV and print feature, which helped me personally move from grief to a celebration of Bob's life.. .

My Thoughts on September 11

Thinking of the victims of 9/11, their families and friends; remembering the first responders, the caregivers, and the outpouring of sympathy and consolation from millions. Recalling the days and months following, when strangers were compassionate, discourse was caring and polite, and people put their personal agendas aside for the greater good. And..saddened at how a nation could pull together in unity, yet fall apart mere months later as we all became victim to petty politics, bullying, fear and manipulation, and disregard of one towards another. Northampton, MA - 9/08/2011 - Northampton Community Television, Valley Free Radio, and The David Pakman Show will host the 2011 Northampton Mayoral Debate sponsored by League of Women's Voters of the Northampton Area and Herrell's Ice Cream on October 11, 2011 at 7pm at the Northampton High School Auditorium. The three member panel will question the two final candidates for mayor, moderated by David Pakman, host of the internationally syndicated television and radio program The David Pakman Show.

ABC40's Scott Coen and Northampton Media's Mary Serreze will join a Northampton High School student for the debate with their own questions, in addition to audience questions and questions from the candidates themselves.

Starting at 7pm, doors will open at the Northampton High School Auditorium at 6:30pm. In 2009, the debate organized by NCTV, VFR, and Pakman was the most highly attended Northampton Mayoral debate in over 20 years, seeing an almost full auditorium, and high attendance is expected again this year. Saying Farewell to Bob Paquette.

One couldn’t have asked for a better day. Saturday was sunny, warm but not too hot, and the summer tourists had not yet overrun Historic Deerfield or the roads leading to it past Yankee Candle.

Approximately 400 family, current and former colleagues and friends came to honor Bob in the historic First Church of Deerfield. Like Bob and Mike, the service was simple and unadorned. The Rev. Ann Hallstein, friends of Bob and Mike, led the service. Several friends and colleagues spoke. Rep. Stan Rosenberg, a longtime family friend, offered the first words of recollection, followed by WFCR staffers Martin Miller and Helen Barrington. Then, they passed the mic. Mike’s mom told those assembled how the family welcomed Bob into their home--and how Bob had a great way of making people laugh. On-air colleague John Montanari told of their special bond. Former WFCR news director Pippin Ross lent her sultry voice to the recollections. And, Tim Neumann, one of Bob’s closest friends and fellow Baptist Boy, offered a recollection that Bob would have chuckled at.

The outpouring of sympathy, condolences and grief...from that posted on WFCR’s website, to that posted on Facebook...from tributes by area media from George Lenker (The Republican) and Scott Coen (ABC40 and MassLive...it’s all been comforting. Some of the comfort comes from friends. Much comes from people who only knew Bob as a trusted voice on “Morning Edition”.

It was a tough farewell. Bob Paquette has been a major part of my professional and person life for over 20 years. But, I’m so glad our lives crossed and that we shared so much.

One of my best friends died unexpectedly last weekend.

I was honored to know Bob Paquette, “Morning Edition” anchor and news producer at WFCR, Public Radio for 20+ years.

Backstory: I joined WFCR in 1987; Bob entered the studio in 1991, but our paths had first crossed earlier. Bob had been the news director, reporter, and anchor for WTTT in Amherst. Even though I was at WFCR in a very part-time role selling underwriting, I was working as a reporter for two separate AM stations, WSPR and WNNZ. I was concurrently arts/travel editor at the Jewish Weekly News. We always ran into each other covering stories, at media events, and other places where press hung out.

We also had something else in common. We were both amongst a handful of out media types. It brought a group of us together, especially as the LGBT rights movement grew in Western Massachusetts, and as the growing number of AIDS service organizations needed media support to survive.

As the years went by, I moved from reporter away from WFCR to WFCR’s Underwriting/Public Relations/Special Events manager and then to independent public relations dude; Bob moved from reporter to WFCR News Director to “Morning Edition” anchor. We rarely saw each other at the station because of different schedules. But, Bob, his then partner/now husband Mike Packard; me, one of my best friends and frequent collaborators Michael Kusek, and Chris Daly from WFCR (friend and colleague of Bob and me) started meeting for monthly “Boys Lunch”. We’d find a restaurant, sit, eat, and laugh for an hour, before going our respective ways.

Boys Lunch attended Bob’s and Mike’s wedding. Boys Lunch attended special events produced by me or Michael Kusek. When Bob was diagnosed with lymphoma, no one dared miss a Boys Lunch, and when Bob was in Brigham & Womens Hospital in Boston for a stem-cell transplant, Boys Lunch travelled to Bob.

During Bob’s illness, our friendship took a new course. As Bob suffered chemo and its effects quietly, and as my lifelong bout with diabetes crossed paths with a difficult-to-heal injury, we becme each other’s special support network. We shared dark moments, bright moments, fears, triumphs. I opened up to Bob in ways I never thought possible. I think he shared things with me that no one else ever knew.

Last Wednesday, May 25, we assembled for Boys Lunch at Northampton's Brewery. In an early blast of summer humidity, we sat on the outside deck and had sandwiches with cold beer. We laughed. The previous few Boys Lunch gatherings had involved discussions about caring for elderly parents. This time, just laughs. After, as Mike ran to a closing, and Chris ran back to work, Bob and I lingered. We had a chance to catch up one-on-one and laugh even more. I returned to work euphoric, because all of us were in great places and happy. In retrospect, that lunch was a gift. A chance to hang out with Bob when both of us were at our best.

His sudden death took me by surprise. I’ve taken great comfort in seeing friends, colleagues and strangers who were WFCR listeners post comments and accolades on Facebook, and after every article commemorating Bob appears. People who know me and know that I’ve worked with WFCR, offer their condolences, whether in the Starbucks line or at Big Y.

Two public accolades moved me to tears, one from a mutual friend, George Lenker, who writes for The Republican; another from Scott Coen at ABC40, a colleague with whom I don’t get to coffee with enough. I’ve posted their stories below.

A recent media event here caused me to reconsider the value of privacy.

The situation: A local TV anchor and reporter (whom I’ve never met personally), was invited to be a keynote speaker at an event honoring those involved who are fighting against bullying of gay teens and those assumed to be gay teens. During his speech, he appeared to be confused or possibly inebriated. Someone in the audience videotaped him at his worst and loaded the video on the web. The station forced his resignation, and the anchor said that he was going to rehab. Sad ending to a bright future.

As a public relations consultant and media person, I often remind clients that any person in the public eye must behave as though they're in public 24/07. That includes television reporters, actors, politicians, CEO’s, clergy, educators and anyone who represents a company, product or service. Anyone with a cellphone can photograph and post someone else’s behavior in seconds. Any email can be forwarded instantly.

In days of old, people respected the boundaries between privacy and the public’s right to know. Very few Americans realised that FDR couldn’t stand unassisted. Few knew of actors’ dalliances or CEO’s indiscretions. People and the media were discrete.

Nonetheless, the person who videotaped and posted TV anchor Paul Mueller's downfall should be chastised. Whoever you are, you've ruined someone's future. At an event which emphasized the negative effects of bullying, you bullied someone via videotape, when they were down.

You're not much different than the person who taped and posted a video about his college roommate in a same-sex tryst. The roommate, Tyler Clemente, later committed suicide after the video made the rounds. You, Mr/Ms Videographer, wouldn't want your private issues made public.

Amherst, MA---Public radio “voice” Diane Rehm will accompany Cross-Culture Journeys' "Fabled Islands of Greece and Turkey" cruise aboard the Aegean Odyssey. Diane Rehm, producer and host of her nationally-syndicated talk show, joins this one-time 14-day/12-night fully-escorted offering, departing the US on September 30, 2011 and returning on October 13, 2011

The cruise aboard the recently-refurbished Aegean Odyssey begins in Piraeus, the Greek port serving the capital of Athens. Ports of call include the ancient city of Mycenae, the capital of Agamemnon; Myceanae, capital of Agamemnon; Heraklion on the island of Crete; the Greek islands of Rhodes, Delos, and Mykonos; and Gallipoli, site of the famous World War I battles. In Turkey, ports of call include Istanbul, the Sea of Mamara and the Dardenelles. The tour ends in Athens.

An optional pre-cruise extension to Athens (September 28 through October 1) is also available at additional cost.

Diane Rehm is host and executive producer of "The Diane Rehm Show" which airs nationally. Each week, more than 1.7 million listeners across the country tune in to the program, which has grown in 29 years from a local morning call-in show to a public broadcasting powerhouse distributed by NPR, NPR Worldwide and SIRIUS satellite radio. Rehm is the author of two autobiographical books. The Capitol Steps make their annual Pioneer Valley visit with their new “Liberal Shop of Horrors” tour for one night only, Saturday, December 18, at 8PM, at Chapin auditorium on the campus of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA.

The "Liberal Shop of Horrors" Tour is an evening of musical political satire which pokes fun at Democrats, Republicans, Tea Partiers and Independents alike. America’s health care, bailouts, the environment, the budget, partisan politics, unfaithful politicians, and a Nobel-Prize winning President are transformed into skit, song and dance.

The Capitol Steps began their antics over 25 years ago, when a group of Capitol Hill folks set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them.Today, The Capitol Steps perform in Washington, DC weekly, and at theatres and concert halls nationwide throughout the year. They have recorded 30 albums, including their latest, "Liberal Shop of Horrors" . They've been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard 4 times a year on NPR stations nationwide during their "Politics Takes a Holiday" radio specials.

South Hadley Youth Commission Appointed

South Hadley, Massachusetts. On Tuesday, October 5, the South Hadley Selectboard voted to establish a youth commission with the mission empowering all youth to become change-makers in the community.

Appointed were adult members: Carol Constant, Carol Isackson, Tanya Kopec, David LaBrie and Christie Reardon. Ultimately it is planned that a total of fifteen young people between the ages of thirteen and twenty-one will serve on the Commission’s Youth Task Force along with seven adults on the Youth Commission. The goal is to include all youth regardless of ability, race, religion, national origin, socio-economic background, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation.

Selectboard member Bruce MacCullagh said "We want our youth to be involved in the community and we want our community to provide programs and services for our youth. The input and participation of South Hadley youth on this commission will bring new ideas and programs to South Hadley."

Some ideas generated to-date include a Winter Carnival; a Mural Project; clean-up and repair of the Buttery Brook Skateboard Park; public service clean-up projects; teen nights, and group trips and activities.
